Local SEO in Manchester: be the business people find on the map
FlyRank is run from Manchester by two founders, Jean Bed Essounda and Hassan Gillani. We put trades, clinics and local shops into the map results and nearby searches their customers use, and we tell you exactly what we did each month.
Short answer
Local SEO gets your business into Google’s map results and into nearby searches such as "plumber Stockport". FlyRank does it for Manchester and Greater Manchester businesses for £750 a month ex VAT, with a three month minimum. The work covers your Google Business Profile, citations, location pages, reviews and local AI answers, and Jean or Hassan sends a plain-English report each month.
What is local SEO, and how is it different from SEO?
Local SEO is the work of being found for searches that have a place attached, such as "electrician near me" or "tyres Gorton". Those searches show a map and a short list of businesses, called the map pack, above the ordinary results. Local SEO is how you earn a place in it.
SEO is the wider job of growing organic search traffic through content, technical health and links. Most businesses with a local customer base should start with local SEO, because it is quicker to act on and it is where local enquiries come from.
Key takeaway: Local SEO wins the map pack, and SEO grows everything around it.
Why does the map pack matter for a Manchester business?
Customers search by their own town, and the map pack answers them with three or four names. Greater Manchester has ten boroughs, and a customer in Stockport searches for "plumber Stockport", not "plumber Manchester".
If you are not in that short list, the customer rings someone else before they ever read your website.
Key takeaway: The map pack is the first impression for most urgent and local searches.
What does local SEO cost, and what is in it?
Local SEO is £750 a month, ex VAT, with a three month minimum, and then it runs month to month. Nothing meaningful happens faster than three months, so we do not pretend otherwise. Every price is on the pricing page.
Each month covers the same five areas, and you get a plain-English report of what was done and what it was for:
- Google Business Profile: set up properly and kept accurate.
- Citations: your business details, consistent on the directories and sites that list you.
- Location pages: a useful page for each area you genuinely serve.
- Reviews: a steady, honest way to collect them and reply to them.
- Local AI answers: making the facts AI tools rely on clear and consistent. This is included, never a separate charge.
Key takeaway: One fixed monthly price covers all five areas, with AI search included.
| Service | Price, ex VAT | Contract | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local SEO | £750 a month | Three month minimum, then month to month | No setup fee. AI answers work included. |
| SEO audit | £750 | One-off | Credited against your first retainer month |
| SEO growth retainer | £1,500 a month | Rolling, with a clean handover | For more content and link building |
What happens in your first 30 days of local SEO?
Month one is diagnosis plus the first visible fixes, following the Radar and Runway stages of the Flightpath Method.
- Week 1: we take access to your Google Business Profile and Search Console, and record your map and search positions for the searches that matter.
- Week 2: we correct your categories, services, hours and description, and list every directory entry that is wrong or missing.
- Week 3: we start fixing citations and agree which location pages to write first.
- Week 4: you receive a written findings report, a task list for months two and three, and a short call to go through it.
Key takeaway: By day 30 your profile is corrected and you hold a written plan.
How do we fix your Google Business Profile?
We start with your Google Business Profile because that is where most local searches end. We check the primary and secondary categories, the services and description, the opening hours, the photos and the link to your website. The category is one of the biggest constraints, and a trade can easily choose the wrong one, such as Electrician when Electrical installation service describes the job better. Check the list inside your own profile, because Google changes it.
If you visit customers and have no shopfront, Google lets you hide your address and set up to 20 service areas. Google also publishes its own tips to improve your local ranking, and we work from that checklist.
Key takeaway: The right category, accurate hours and a hidden address for van-based businesses fix most profile problems.
Why do citations and consistent business details matter?
Google compares your business name, address and phone number across the web, and the more they agree, the more confident it is that you are real and where you say you are. Inconsistent details are the most common thing we are paid to clean up: an old phone number, a former trading name, a closed listing still showing.
We build a list of the directories and registers that matter for your trade, correct the wrong entries and add the missing ones. We do not buy bulk listings, because a few accurate entries are worth more than hundreds of careless ones.
Key takeaway: A few accurate listings beat hundreds of careless ones.
| Type of business | Where we check first |
|---|---|
| Trades | Checkatrade, TrustATrader, Yell, and the Gas Safe Register or NICEIC where they apply |
| Clinics | Bing Places, Yell and your professional register, such as the GDC for dentists or the HCPC for physiotherapists |
| Local shops and garages | Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yell and Facebook |
| Online sellers with a local base | Bing Places, Companies House details and your social profiles |
Do you need location pages?
You need one if you genuinely serve an area and a customer there could reasonably search for you by that place name. A location page covers the work you do there, the questions people there ask, and how to reach you. It is not a copy of your homepage with the town name swapped.
We map the areas you actually cover before writing anything, such as Salford, Stockport, Trafford, Altrincham, Bolton, Oldham, Rochdale, Bury, Tameside and Wigan. On the Massage Master Manchester project, the keyword map covers separate areas of the city, and the work is still pre-launch, so there are no results to quote.
Key takeaway: Write a page for each area you truly serve, and skip the rest.
How do reviews fit into local SEO?
Reviews are one of the clearest signals of a real business, and they are what people read before they ring you. We help you ask satisfied customers in a simple, repeatable way, and we reply to every review, good or bad. Google’s guidance on getting more reviews is the basis for our process.
We never buy, trade or write reviews. Google prohibits offering incentives for reviews, it can get your profile suspended, and customers can usually tell.
Key takeaway: Ask often, reply to everyone and never pay for a review.
Does local SEO help you show up in AI answers?
Yes, because the facts an AI tool uses to recommend a local business are largely the ones local SEO puts right: a consistent name and address, accurate listings, genuine reviews and clear pages. We check what ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity say about you and fix the sources that are wrong.
This is part of the £750 a month retainer. We do not charge extra for it. Our AI search optimisation service explains the work in more detail.
Key takeaway: Correct local facts feed both the map pack and AI answers.
Local SEO, DIY, freelancer, big agency or paid ads: which suits you?
Local SEO suits businesses whose customers are within a drive or a few postcodes of you. The options differ mainly in who does the work and what you can see.
Key takeaway: Local SEO lasts longer than ads and costs less than most agencies.
| Option | What you get | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Do it yourself | Free apart from your time; you can claim your profile today. | Wrong categories and duplicate listings often go unnoticed. |
| Freelancer | Often lower cost and a direct contact. | Reporting and coverage vary, and one person covers every task. |
| Large agency | A full team and wide tooling. | You may be one of many accounts, with the work done by junior staff. |
| Paid ads | Visible within hours. | Visibility stops the day the budget does. |
| FlyRank | £750 a month with a named founder doing the work. | No guaranteed map position, and we say so. |
What proof does FlyRank have for local work?
FlyRank is a young agency, so we show dated facts, not awards. In August 2026 we audited Hyde Road Wheels and Tyres in Gorton, Manchester, and found the Book Now button on six service pages led to a page that does not exist, and about ten pages competed for the shop’s own name.
That was an audit, with no results to report. Read the Hyde Road audit case study and the WJ Smith Construction case study, see all of our work, then get your free visibility check.
Key takeaway: Our case studies list baselines and dates, and claim no result we have not earned.
Who is FlyRank’s local SEO not right for?
FlyRank’s local SEO is not for every business, and we say so early. We turn work down in these cases:
- You want a guaranteed map-pack position by a set date.
- You have no physical location or service area that Google can verify.
- You want reviews bought or written for you.
- Nobody nearby searches for what you offer.
- You need paid map ads managed, which is a different discipline.
Key takeaway: If local SEO cannot help, we will tell you before you pay.
Which Greater Manchester towns does FlyRank’s local SEO cover?
FlyRank works with businesses across Greater Manchester, including Salford, Stockport, Trafford, Altrincham, Bolton, Oldham, Rochdale, Bury, Tameside and Wigan, as well as the city centre. Jean is Manchester-based, so local knowledge shapes the work: which town names customers type, and which competitors appear on your doorstep.
We work remotely by default and meet in person across the region when it helps.
Key takeaway: Local SEO is won town by town.
How long does local SEO take, and what is in the monthly report?
Local SEO usually takes three to six months to move meaningfully, and anyone promising rankings sooner is guessing. These are our planning ranges, not promises.
- Report contents: every task done, your map and search positions by name, profile views, calls and direction requests where Google provides them, what AI tools said about you, and next month’s plan.
Key takeaway: The report lists what we did and why, and says plainly when a month was quiet.
| Your situation | First visible movement | More calls and enquiries |
|---|---|---|
| Claimed profile with fixable errors, established site | Weeks 6 to 12 | Months 3 to 6 |
| Profile and listings neglected for years | Weeks 8 to 16 | Months 4 to 6 |
| New business, no history | Months 3 to 6 | Months 6 to 12 |
| Crowded trade in central Manchester | Months 4 to 8 | Months 8 to 12 |
FAQ
What else do people ask about local SEO in Manchester?
How much does local SEO cost?
Local SEO from FlyRank costs £750 a month, ex VAT, with a three month minimum and then month to month. AI search work is included at no extra cost, and there is no setup fee. A one-off SEO audit is £750, credited against your first month. However, a growth retainer at £1,500 a month suits businesses wanting more content and links.
How long does local SEO take?
Local SEO usually takes three to six months to move calls and map positions meaningfully. Early weeks are foundation work, such as correcting your Google Business Profile and listings, so results lag behind effort. A new business in a competitive area can take up to a year. FlyRank reports monthly so you can see progress. However, nobody can promise a date.
Is local SEO different from SEO?
Yes. Local SEO targets map results and searches with a place attached, while SEO is the wider work of growing organic traffic through content, technical fixes and links. They overlap, and many businesses start with local because it acts faster. FlyRank sells local SEO on this page and wider SEO on its SEO page. However, a business with national customers needs more than local work.
Can you guarantee a place in the map results?
No, and nobody honestly can. Google decides who appears in the map pack, using relevance, distance and prominence. An agency can improve your relevance and prominence by fixing your profile, listings and reviews, but it cannot move you closer to the searcher. FlyRank fixes what Google looks at and reports what changes. However, a guarantee is a warning sign.
Do I need a shopfront to appear on Google Maps?
No. Service-area businesses, such as plumbers and mobile therapists, can appear without a public shopfront. Google lets you hide your address and list up to 20 service areas. You still need a real address for verification and must serve customers in person. FlyRank sets this up as part of the profile work. However, a hidden address means you cannot rank for searches outside your listed areas.
Should I buy reviews to rank higher?
No. Google’s rules prohibit offering incentives for reviews and treat fake reviews as misleading content, and your profile can be suspended. Genuine reviews from real customers, collected steadily, are what help. FlyRank shows clients a simple way to ask for reviews and replies to every one. However, reviews are one signal among several, so they cannot fix a wrong category or inconsistent listings.
Does FlyRank take on local businesses outside Manchester?
Yes, though our local knowledge is deepest in Greater Manchester, from Salford and Stockport to Oldham and Wigan. Most local SEO work happens online, so distance matters little. We will tell you honestly if a market is outside our experience. FlyRank has also worked with a contractor in North Carolina. However, for in-person meetings we focus on the Manchester region.
Who will do my local SEO?
Jean Bed Essounda or Hassan Gillani, the two founders, will do your work and write your monthly report. FlyRank has no sales team that hands you to another department after you sign. Jean is Manchester-based. You can reach us on +44 7495 335550 or at hello@flyrank.co.uk. However, with two founders there is a limit on how many clients we take.
