What is answer engine optimisation (AEO)?

TL;DR: Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content and your online presence so that search engines and AI assistants can find, understand and quote you when they answer a question. It builds on SEO rather than replacing it. It improves your chances of being used as a source, but no one can guarantee a citation. This guide defines AEO, explains how it works, and sets out what a UK business should do first.

What is answer engine optimisation?

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the work of making your content easy for a search or AI system to extract, trust and quote as the answer to a question. It covers how pages are written, how they are structured, and how clearly your business is identified across the web.

The term describes a shift in where answers appear. Instead of ten blue links, many searches now return a written answer first, with links to the sources behind it. AEO focuses on being one of those sources.

You may also see the same field called generative engine optimisation (GEO), LLM optimisation or AI SEO. The names differ, but the working method is the same: give clear answers to real questions, back them with evidence, and make your business easy to identify.

At FlyRank we treat AEO as an extension of search optimisation, not a separate discipline. A page that is clear, accurate and well organised serves both a human reader and a machine that has to decide what to quote.

What counts as an answer engine?

An answer engine is any system that responds to a question with a composed answer rather than only a list of links. Examples include Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Gemini.

These systems differ in how they retrieve information, but they share a pattern. They take a question, search for supporting material, then write a response and link to some of the pages they used.

Google describes this directly. Its documentation says AI features may use a “query fan-out” technique, issuing several related searches across subtopics and sources to build a response (Google Search Central: AI features and your website). A single question can therefore pull in pages that never ranked for the exact wording.

SystemWhat it doesWhat it needs from your site
Google AI Overviews / AI ModeWrites a summary with links, using related searchesPage indexed and eligible to show a snippet
ChatGPT searchSearches the web and cites sources in its answerCrawlable by OAI-SearchBot
PerplexityCites sources beside each part of an answerAccessible, clearly written pages
Voice assistantsRead back a single short answerA concise, self-contained answer passage

Key takeaway: an answer engine composes a response and cites a few sources. AEO is about being one of them.

How does AEO work in practice?

AEO works by matching your content to the questions people ask, placing a direct answer at the start of each section, and supporting it with context, evidence and clear structure. Machines then find it cheap to read and safe to quote.

Most answer engines work at passage level. They retrieve a section of a page, not the whole document. That makes each section’s opening lines important, because that is often what gets lifted.

We use a four-part pattern for this, sometimes written as A-Q-C-E.

  • Answer: state the direct answer in the first one or two sentences.
  • Qualify: add context, a definition and the source of any figure.
  • Cover: address the related questions a reader asks next, in order.
  • Extend: finish with FAQs, internal links and a clear mention of what you offer.

Each paragraph should make sense if read alone. Avoid phrases such as “as mentioned above”, because a system that quotes one passage will not carry the earlier text with it.

Structure supports this. Descriptive headings, short paragraphs, lists and tables make a page cheaper to parse, which helps both people and machines. Our guide to how AI Overviews choose sources shows where that fits in Google’s process.

Why does AEO matter for UK businesses?

AEO matters because customers increasingly get a composed answer before they visit any website, and the businesses named in that answer gain attention that others miss. It is most valuable where people research before they buy.

For a UK service business, the questions are practical. A prospective customer might ask which firm to choose, what something costs, or how a process works. If an answer engine can find a clear, well-sourced response on your site, you have a chance of being part of what it says.

It is worth keeping perspective. Google remains the main route to most websites, and classic rankings still matter. Google’s own guidance states that no special optimisation is required for AI features beyond standard SEO fundamentals. AEO is therefore best seen as a way to sharpen content that you should already be publishing, not a new channel to bolt on.

The local angle matters too. Systems answering “near me” or regional questions rely on consistent business details and location signals. A Manchester firm benefits from stating its service area plainly and keeping its name, address and description identical wherever they appear.

What should a business do first?

Start by listing the 20 to 30 questions your customers genuinely ask, then answer the most important ones in clear, standalone sections on pages you control. Check the technical basics so that search and AI crawlers can reach those pages.

  1. Map the questions

Gather questions from sales calls, support emails, Google’s “People also ask” and community forums. Group them by stage: awareness, comparison, decision.

  2. Write answer-first sections

Give each question its own heading and a one or two sentence answer, followed by detail and evidence. Our AI content quality checklist sets out what to verify before publishing.

  3. Check access

Make sure the pages are indexable and that robots.txt does not block the crawlers you want. OpenAI states that allowing OAI-SearchBot helps content appear in ChatGPT search results (OpenAI crawler documentation).

  4. Make the entity clear

Use the same business name and description everywhere, and consider structured data that matches visible text. See schema markup for AI search and entity SEO for UK businesses.

  5. Measure and refine

Track the prompts that matter and note which pages are cited. The method is covered in measuring AI search visibility.

If you would like help turning this into a plan, our answer engine optimisation services begin with a review of how your business currently appears in AI answers.

What can AEO not promise?

AEO cannot guarantee that any answer engine will mention or cite you. These systems choose sources by their own methods, those methods change, and answers can differ between users and between days.

Be wary of anyone who promises placement in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews. Google states that meeting all the requirements does not ensure a page will be crawled, indexed or served. The same caution applies to every other platform.

What you can control is the quality of your content, the accessibility of your pages and the clarity of your brand. Those improve the odds, and they also help ordinary search and human visitors, so the work keeps its value even when an assistant changes how it cites.

Be cautious with new technical files, too. Google says you do not need AI-specific files or special schema.org markup to appear in its AI features. We cover the evidence on llms.txt separately so you can decide whether it is worth the time.

Key takeaway: AEO raises your chances of being quoted by making answers clear, sourced and easy to retrieve. It does not guarantee inclusion.

Frequently asked questions

What does AEO stand for?

AEO stands for answer engine optimisation. It is the practice of structuring content so that search engines and AI assistants can extract and quote it when answering a question. It is closely related to terms such as GEO and LLM optimisation, which describe largely the same work.

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No, but they overlap heavily. SEO aims to rank pages in search results, while AEO aims to have your content used inside composed answers. Both depend on crawlable, helpful, well-organised pages. AEO adds a focus on direct answers, passage-level clarity and brand identity. See AEO vs SEO.

Do I need special markup to appear in Google AI Overviews?

No. Google states that no special schema.org structured data or AI-specific file is required for its AI features. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. Structured data can still help describe your content accurately, but it is not a requirement.

Can AEO guarantee my business is mentioned by ChatGPT?

No. ChatGPT chooses sources using its own search and ranking methods, and answers vary. You can make your site crawlable by OAI-SearchBot and publish clear, well-sourced answers, which improves your chances. Any provider promising guaranteed mentions is overstating what is possible.

How long does AEO take to show results?

There is no fixed timescale. Crawling and indexing take days to weeks, and a new page must also be selected as a source, which is less predictable. Treat AEO as ongoing content and entity work, and review progress against a set of tracked questions rather than expecting a single date.

Does AEO suit small local businesses?

Yes. Local businesses often have clear, specific questions about services, prices, areas covered and process. Answering these plainly, and keeping business details consistent across your site and profiles, gives answer engines reliable material to use. Start with your most commonly asked customer questions.
